Meribel, French Alps, Summer

|
Sports activities For those who are looking for an active holiday the possibilities are numerous - here are descriptions of some! Around the village and in the surrounding alps there are endless trails for walking and biking. Cable cars and mountain lifts operate during July and August, giving easy access to the heights of some of the mountains in the area. |
Meribel is situated at 1,600 mtrs on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. World famous as a ski resort it is rapidly becoming known as a summer destination. Its popularity lies in the fact that it has all of the convenience of a purpose-built summer sporting resort but is, at the same time, a very pretty village built in traditional wooden chalet style with stunning views over the surrounding Alps.

The lifts carry bikes and give access to a number of high level cycling routes. It is also possible to cycle from Meribel to surrounding villages such as Courchevel and Brides-les-Bains, cycling more or less downhill only, using the lift system to return to Meribel. Bikes can usually be hired locally. Walkers have the choice of following some of the "Grande Randonee" routes which run through the local mountains or simply heading off on a trail with a map - the tourist office provides maps and descriptions of local walks (although not always in English). Look out for the local mountain refuges - these are often set in idyllic locations. Climbers might like to try the climbing wall in the sports centre before testing their skills on the Via Ferrata which has been constructed along the rocky spires of the Saulire mountain above Meribel.
There is a superb golf course located above the village, near to the Altiport. Golfers are advised to beware of low flying planes as they tee off on the third! If you enjoy horse riding, lessons are available and experienced riders can take half-day treks along trails high up in the mountainside. Several companies offer river rafting in the main valley a few kilometres from Meribel, and in the resort itself there are tennis courts, a roller-skating rink, a full-size ice skating rink and a swimming pool with a flume and a tiny baby pool. If you want to take to the air, you could take a hang-gliding trip from the top of the Saulire mountain or learn to parascend - the local school runs courses throughout the summer. The local tourist office runs activity courses for children from five upwards and also runs an activity area near the swimming pool with trampolines, bouncy castles and mini golf. There is a charge for these activities but not for the swings and slides nearby.
Relaxation
If all this exercise sounds too much, the alternative is to sit in the sun and take in the atmosphere, or perhaps to take a few gentle walks. For instance, the local lake is situated in a spectacular, flat, alpine plain just a few kilometres from the village centre. It is usually only necessary to walk for a few minutes from the nearest habitation to find yourself in peaceful and usually solitary surroundings. You will also find that your fellow holidaymakers are much more likely to be French than of any other nationality. In the village, the emphasis is on relaxation in informal surroundings. There is a good range of bars and restaurants, 3 supermarkets, butchers, stationers (with English papers if you must!), gift shops and clothes shops. If you decide to eat in there is no need to cook as the local charcuteries are excellent. Patisseries in the village specialise in pastries decorated with local fruits - very difficult to resist! Mid to end August, the shops start to offer spectacular discounts on last year's ski equipment and clothing, holding a street market on one day near the end of August. With discounts of up to 50% generally available, you can pay for your holiday from the savings on your new gear!
If you decide to explore nearby valleys, you will find them very unspoilt and rural. Villages like Pralognan close by have stunning views from the village and also offer excellent walking, biking and climbing. Easily within driving distance for day visits is Lake Annecy - cyclists could try the cycle track around the entire lake - it's only 30 kms with much of the route on the flat. Other well-known places such as Megeve and Chamonix are also easily within reach.
